Perfect weather and a beautiful venue greeted 50 Florida Region Youth Age Group athletes, 13 Youth Elite Athletes, and 7 Junior Elite athletes on the weekend of August 1-2 in West Chester, Ohio for USA Triathlon Youth & Junior National Championship. This was the 4th year that this championship has been hosted by the City of West Chester, and I continue to be impressed with the level of support they provide for the athletes.
The Florida Region was again represented by a handful of youth clubs including Triton Elite Multisport, KLR Landsharks, South Florida Lightning, along with a few others. In total the event saw nearly 1,000 athletes competing in the Elite races on Saturday, and the Team Relay and Age Group events on Sunday.
Congratulations to our Florida Region National Champions Braxton Legg (10 year old male division), Lawson Mcleod (11 year old male division), and Nicholas Raffinengo (12 year old male division). All three of these athletes have earned multiple national championship including Nicholas Raffinengo taking national championship honors the past four years, and Lawson McLeod earning national championship honors in 4 of the last 5 years. Braxton Legg was national champion in his 7 year old year!
In addition, the following Florida Region athletes earned podium positions: Turner Glenn (8 year old male division),Hannah Fowler (2nd place 12 year old female division), Mikayla Apicella (3rd place 12 year old female division), and Augusto Cohn (15 year old male division).
Although the championship only awards the top three athletes, I want to recognize the following top 5 finishers: Reese McClellan (4th place 8 year olds female division), Gianna Apicella (5th place 8 year female division), Phoenix Marsiglio (5th place 8 year old male division), Liam Maloney (5th place 9 year old male division), Taylor Stone (4th place 13 year old female division).
Both the 7-10 and 11-15 Age Group races were extremely competitive with lots and super-fast young athletes from across the country. As your RYDC, I am so impressed with how well our Florida athletes represent their region, and the level of coaching we continue to see across Florida and the nation.
Lastly, our Florida Region Elite athletes also represented quite nicely in extremely competitive draft legal races. In the Youth Elite division congratulations to our top finisher Anna Stock (12th place overall female), and Luis Ortiz (12th place overall male division). In the Junior Elite Division congratulations to Caroline Condon (37th place overall female division), and Graham Pimentel (9th place overall male division).
