USAT Florida Region January Woman of the Month!

HelenaWOMJAN3

Helena hails originally from London, England. A proud Londoner, she moved to Florida in 1998 to marry her American husband and subsequently became the mother of two feisty daughters.

Her journey from spectating year after year with her Mum at the London Marathon to running it, tackling the other majors and various running distances, completing a half

Ironman and becoming known in the South Florida running and biking community as ‘the Running Mermaid’ (badass Mermaid, no less) after she learned to swim at the age of 40 is colorful and inspiring.

As an athlete she is a regular in gymnasia, bike training centers and on local roads running or clipped onto her distinctive black and white Quintaroo bike affectionately called ‘Nola’. Helena ran the London Marathon in 2009 after being successfully treated for Ventricular Tachycardia (VT) a potentially life threatening and debilitating heart disorder. She said that she ‘just winged’ the race as she knew nothing about running back then. For her, seeing the finish line was a memory that will ‘live with her forever’. She raised $6,000 for the British Heart Foundation and then decided to run New York. After this race she realized she could run all the world ‘majors’. In her own inimitable words ‘Coz why not?’.

To date she has run the Chicago and Berlin marathons with only Boston and the newly minted ‘major’ in Tokyo, to go. She started sprint triathlons in 2012, completed the HITS series Olympic distance triathlon, then completed the New Orleans Half Ironman in 2013 and has the Texas Ironman in her sights for 2014.

Possibly her greatest achievement has been be the founding of The Mermaid Club in 2013. This online global community for women who aspire to ‘think big, make things happen and inspire others’ is beautifully described in the hash-tag she coined ’Live Life, Make Waves”. The club links women all over the world, many of whom are working mothers, who in Anais Nin’s words, ‘have a great fear of shallow living but no fear of depths’. They share their achievements, knowledge, athletic journeys and support for each other via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and a website: http://livelifemakewaves.com/. Inspiring women to ‘show your fins’ and take the first step of a journey that will fulfill them in so many ways is the foundation of the rapidly growing success of the club.

Helena is a member of the North West Broward Road Runners Club in Parkland/Coral Springs, Florida, the Boca Raton Triathletes Club and an avid rider at Doghouse Cycling. She started her biking journey with G2 Cycling among others. She also loves to knit, drink a nice cup of tea (with milk of course), be ‘brilliant’ and avoid cooking wherever she can unless she can throw it in her blender. She is a regular woman, mother and competitor who simply lives by a simple mantra: do it and don’t quit, ‘coz why not? Fins up!
